Workshop on “Oral Science Communication”-14 October, 2010

Today I attended HCCI-course in “Oral science communication”, October 14.  The course started at 9 AM to 12 o’clock in room 2.113 at Kroghstraede 3.

I received the invitation from Hanne, the Secretary of HCCI The HCCI-Doctoral Research Programme, and The International PhD-programme in Music Therapy Department of Communication. She summarized about the workshop as the following:

” If you want to know, how you in few lines can get people interested in your scientific research and how you yourself can come to a deeper undstanding of it, this 3-hour workshop will be a good starting point.

The workshop is a hands-on workshop, and it will introduce you to different tools for structuring and giving oral presentations of your scientific work to the public. You will work with your own PhD-project and learn how to pitch it.  Furthermore you will get experience in using structural tools to sharpen your research focus.

The workshop is led by Bent Nørgaard (www.bentnø, theatre director and former head of Centre for Art and Science, University of Southern Denmark. He is an experienced science communicator and teacher.”

Following are the notes that I took. Apart from the delivery plan I learned Two very important learnings for my research idea to be made more structured are below. I believe these would save me from getting distracted by too many ideas or issues while writing and also presenting.

  • The Actantial Model: Includes Subject, Object, Helper and Opponents, these enable to identify the title, outcome, barriers or problems, supports or favorable environment etc. in the research.
  • Pitch: It is a 90 word presentation used by the people in media to convince a producer may be to get the idea and get convinced. For me it is like an Abstract.

My Pitch (Working Abstract of Ph.D Project):

Educational divide in rural secondary institutes in Bangladesh may remain despite government’s “Digital Bangladesh” roadmap, NGO & academic collaborations, public private partnerships and individual efforts. My qualitative diffusion study on a village and a technical school in addressing various social barriers (like electricity insufficiency, affordability, fear factor, incentives for teachers, parents’ motivation etc.) are more humanistic and locale than technological. Sustainable diffusion reasoning can be identified to orchestrate the social mediating factors in bridging the educational divide.

Selected Journals and Conferences for Literature Review

Upon discussion with the Ph.D. supervisor, I have decided to follow the following conference and journals for my literature review. It is very easy to be distracted and carried away by too many sources. That is why I shall be following the scholarly sources from the following:

Selected from High Priority List of Danish Government

My selection list is stored in My folder:
